This article is about the organic compound. For the nutritional supplement preparation, see multivitamin. Fruits and vegetables are often a good source of vitamins. A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism.[1] A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid functions as vitamin C for some animals but not others, and vitamins D and K are required in the human diet only in certain circumstances.[2] The term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, or essential amino acids, nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health but are otherwise required less often.[3] Vitamins are classified by their biological and chemical activity, not their structure. Thus, each "vitamin" may refer to several vitamer compounds that all show the biological activity associated with a particular vitamin. Such a set of chemicals are grouped under an alphabetized vitamin "generic descriptor" title, such as "vitamin A, " which includes the compounds retinal, retinol, and many carotenoids.[4] Vitamers are often inter-converted in the body. Vitamins have diverse biochemical functions, including function as hormones (e.g. vitamin D), antioxidants (e.g. vitamin E), and mediators of cell signaling and regulators of cell and tissue growth and differentiation (e.g. vitamin A).[5] The largest number of vitamins (e.g. B complex vitamins) function as precursors for enzyme cofactor bio-molecules (coenzymes), that help act as catalysts and substrates in metabolism. I started being vegatairian at the begining of 2006 as a new years resolution.also to get fit and in shape was part of it.I have thyroid problems and it makes me slower, fat, and less activeso I have to take a pill everyday.from the begining of the year I slowly sheded pounds I went from 98 to 87. I am STILL losing wait but i don't need to,it just keeps going away.My long diet, activeness,and being a vegitarian has chaned me completely , not just by looksbut what I like.I always love to do active things, especially running.I love to work out, and I think I have OCD I hate eating badly, and not exercising.I still eat but I'm a VERY, VERY picky eater. sometimes , my parents think I'm anorexic or balemic. But I haven't thrown up in years.and I eat. not as much as when I was over wieght. but I eat. . But what what is the worry is if I'm getting the right foods. so what might be some good nutritions for a vegitarian ?
