Fasting before a cholesterol / lipid panel? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)

My dad's doctor told hm to fast 5-14 hours before the blood work. That seems like an expansive range. Is it better to fast the longer period, or can he eat a light breakfast six hours before going to the lab? Also, sorry if it's stupid, but does fasting apply to water / liquids as well, or just food? Hi-- I love to cook and enjoy food. But, I like the bad stuff. I'm at a good weight, but just had a blood panel that showed high cholesterol, lipids, and fatty liver. Ick! I know there are tons of websites for healthy eating, and know about healthy cooking methods, but just love tasty food. I would appreciate people sharing their own favorite good, healthy recipes. How does eating affect fasting blood work? (Answers: 6) (Comments: 0)

I am diabetic, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I normally have an A1c and Cholesterol/Lipid panels done every 3 months. It happens occasionally that during the overnight fasting period my sugar drops below what most people consider safe. Example while typing this my sugar is 59 which low enough that I should not drive or operate dangerous equipment and should probably drink 1/2 a cup of orange juice. The other night I woke up and my sugar was 30 which is way low and very dangerous. How adversely would a cup of OJ, hard candy, glucose tabs/jell/drink, or even a lite yogurt affect my test results? I prefer mini candy bars or segmented regular sized one, yogurt to bring my sugars up normally as I know exactly the carb, calorie, fat content of each portion. The glucose tabs work but I have less self control when consuming them for some reason, usually eat half the small container, as I do with say a Hersey bar where I can have two or three squares then stop. What should I do if I am having the fasting blood work but need to consume something because my sugar bottoms out?
