My younger brother (12, nearly 13) has a body mass index of 16.67, which is classified as underweight. My whole family are very against him being underweight-they are constantly trying to make him eat more and build up some muscles. Does BMI work on younger children, so is this correct that he is underweight? (He's quite tall for his age, 5"2, well taller than most of his friends, and has quite a large bone structure, doesn't appear underweight or sickly) And if he is underweight, he is not bulemic (sorry, i can't spell!) and eats much more than me, the same amount as my 16 year old brother in fact, and does sports about 3 times a week, if he is underweight, is there much i should do? I'm doing an experiment for Biology in which I determine whether 16 year old boys or girls have a higher heart rate based on Body Mass Index. The title of the lab is "The Effect of Body Mass Index on the Heart Rate of 16-year-old Humans (Homo sapiens sapiens)" I'm having a hard time determining which is my independent and dependent variable. Well before i tell you my problem i would like to tell you some facts that might help you find my answer. My name is Carl and i am 13 years old. I weight 170 pounds. I am 5"10 <<(Height.) Well about a month ago i got a physical. The doctor said i was overweight and was amazed on how strong i was for a 13 year old kid. I am currently working out twice a week at the gym, i have lacrosse games and practices. So the doctor then recommended some ""KID FIT"" program to help me lose weight and eat the right way. Now let me tell you another thing about myself, i don't eat junkfood or massive ammounts of bad food.All i eat is the right porportion and organic food. Back to the kid fit thing. Every 3 months i go in, they take my weight,my height and check up on my body. So when i was there they took a BMI (aka body mass index) on me. They found out that i need to eat more ""Fatty"" foods. As i know you are saying ""WHAT??"" i feel the same way. The doctor at kid fit was "amused" on how strong and active i was and questined why i was even here. He also said i looked nothing alike to any of the other kids who do need this program. Now i don't really enjoy being "strong" as much as you may think. I was overweight to play football for 3 years so i just went to all of the practices for training. Now a couple weeks later my mom has planned out more kid fit programs for me to go to. Now i'm thinking "What the hell! the doctor said their is nothing wrong with me and i need to eat more fatty foods." But that wasn't enough for my mom (the overachiever she is :). Now she wants me to lose like 35 pounds of fat. But when i got like BMI on some 20K dollar machine it said i had to get more fatt in my body. So that means losing my mustle. < Get the answers...

Is it safe & possible to lose 5 lbs. a week? Also, how many calories should my diet be at my healthy weight? (Answers: 1) (Comments: 0)

I am about 4 ft 11 in and I weigh 163 lbs. I've checked my body mass index on several health websites online & found that I'm about 76 lbs. over-weight. I want to change that and reach a healthy weight & life style. I've tried several times in the past, but have had great difficulty with changing, although this time I think I've found a plan. Here are my main problems: 1. I have a sedentary life style - I need ideas for physical activities that I can do indoors, mainly due to where I live. -Also, I have an extremely hectic schedule, so it's difficult to fit in time for exercise. -The most I could fit is maybe 30 minutes a day on weekdays, and about 1 - 2 hours on weekends if I'm lucky. 2. My meal portions are much too large - I have no idea how big each portion is supposed to be. - I don't know how to count/keep track of my calorie intake. 3. Once I reach my healthy weight (87 lbs) what should my daily calorie intake be (sedentary life-style)? I've done some cross referencing and found that I'm actually 73 lbs. overweight. My Healthy Weight is supposed to be 90 lbs. I weigh 163 right now.
